Gund/Steiff/Russ/Boyds
Have you ever wondered about the major tear bear companies? Each one makes a different type of teddy bear. They all began a long time ago and are still doing well now.
The Gund Teddy bear company shocked everyone when they appeared in 1906. They had a brilliant idea to understuff their bears which kept the bears extremely soft and cuddly. Baby Gund branched off the Gund brand making bears that were extra soft and easy for babies to hold. They also made rattles, blankets and other things for babies.
Steiff began to distribute teddy bears in 1903 to a New York Company when it ordered 3000 of her bears. She would later created the first black teddy bear in mourning for those that were lost in Titanic.
Every time Steiff makes a new design they have to make 1000s just to keep in stock.
Russ Berrie & Co. began with only $500 to its name and manufacturing from the
inside of a garage space, but as the company grew so did the product line. Then in 1995 Russ began to produce the “Bears From the Past” series of teddy bear collectibles.
Boyds teddy bears all began when the owner got tired of painting ducks for his antique shop. When his son was born he designed his own stuffed bear which went on to become the first of many in the line of the famous “Boyds Bears.”
